Setup VPN to connect IPMI/KVM on US Dedicated Server

Okay, so here is how you can set up your VPN connecting for Windows 7. If you are using a different operating system or are a pro that just wants all the settings, then here they are.

VPN address: VPN IP Adress
VPN type: IPSEC/L2TP
L2TP pre-shared key: pre-shared key

VPN Username: Your user
VPN Password: Your pass

Now, if you have no idea what that means or would prefer more visual instructions for Windows 7 then please read on.

Set up L2TP VPN in Windows 7

Before setting up your VPN connection, it is always a good idea to make sure your version of Windows 7 is up to date by running Windows Update.

Open the Start Menu

First, click on the Start Menu and type "VPN" into the search box.

Click on the "Set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection."

Enter the server information

Now, enter the server information as below.

In the text box labelled "Internet address" type VPN server host name: VPN IP Adress

In the text box labelled "Destination name" type " VPN" or whatever you want. This is the name of the connection, and will show up in the "Connect to a network" screen when we are done.

Lastly, make sure that the checkbox labelled "Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later" is checked.

Then click the "Next" button.

Enter your VPN username and password

In this screen, enter your VPN username and password.

In the text box labelled "User name:", enter username.

In the text box labelled "Password:", enter your password.

Optionally, check the "Remember this password" checkbox and you will not have to enter your password when you connect to the VPN for this server.

Then, click the "Create" button. We do not want to connect yet, so just click "Close".

Go to the connection

Click on the Start Menu, type the word "Network" into the search box, and click on "Network and Sharing Center".

When the Network and Sharing Center opens, click on "Connect to a network".

When you click on "Connect to a network", a list of VPNs pops up. Right click on the " VPN" connection (the VPN connection just created) and choose "Properties".

Options Settings

In the "Options" tab we need to make sure that the "Include Windows logon domain" checkbox is not checked.

Edit the VPN type to L2TP

In the "Properties" of new VPN connection, click on the "Type of VPN" pop up menu and select "L2TP/IPsec".

Next, click on the "Advanced Settings" button.

Set the Preshared Key

In the "Advanced Properties" dialog, click the radio button labelled "Use preshared key for authentication". Then type "pre-shared key" into the textbox labelled "Key". Then click the "OK" button.

Networking settings

This screen shows you the network settings. You may have different items in your list. In the list of items that you see, make sure that only the "Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)" and "Client for Microsoft Networks" items are checked. If other protcols are checked, uncheck them by clicking on the checkbox.

The VPN currently does not route anything except TCP/IP version 4, and the Microsoft client and file sharing protocols are not required for correct operation.

Next, click on the "Internet Protocol Version 4" line so that it is selected, and then click on the "Properties" button. We do not need to change any of the settings regarding the IP address or DNS settings.

Next, we click on the "Advanced" button.

Here we need to uncheck the "Use default gateway on remote network" checkbox. This will allow your regular internet connection to function normally and only send traffic to the VPN that is supposed to go to the VPN.

Next, we click "OK" on each of the remaining open dialogs until they are all saved.

And done!
You are now done with your setup! You have set up your VPN connection to use L2TP and should be able to connect to our VPN server by this connection.
